Glossary
Terms used in these docs
Section titled “Terms used in these docs”The token of the Bittensor network, written τ in the app. Free TAO is TAO in your wallet that is not staked anywhere, shown as Available.
Subnet
Section titled “Subnet”A part of the Bittensor network with its own number, its own token and its own pool. The app names a subnet by its number, as SN followed by the number, and by its name. When a subnet is dissolved, its number goes to the next subnet registered.
A subnet’s token, written α. Its price in TAO comes from the subnet’s pool. Buying alpha stakes it with a validator.
Subnet 0, where TAO is staked one for one, without a pool. The app shows root stake as Staked TAO.
Validator
Section titled “Validator”An operator you stake with. A validator keeps a commission, its take, out of the rewards of the stake it holds.
Coldkey
Section titled “Coldkey”Your wallet’s account: an address in SS58 format, starting with 5. It holds your free TAO and owns your stake.
Hotkey
Section titled “Hotkey”The key a validator operates with. Your stake is held on a validator’s hotkey, while your coldkey owns it.
Price impact and slippage
Section titled “Price impact and slippage”How much your own trade moves the price, and how far the price may move before the chain refuses your trade. See Swaps and slippage.
Profit that bots take by trading around a visible transaction. See MEV Shield.
